The most abundant of the Atlantic swordfish species. The Canaries are ideal for beating records, specimens weighing more than 650kg have been caught. A solitary fish, it is caught by trawling from 4 to 8 knots, preferably from spring to summer. Maximum size: 450cm.

Migratory species frequently in the Canaries. Can weigh around 82 kg. It swims in clear and deep water with surface temperatures of 22°C. Optimal season: summer and occasionally in the spring and autumn. Maximum size: 280cm.

The Canaries are one of the few areas in the world where this species can be found in abundance, principally from spring to autumn. Current World Record for Women on 80 pound line. Maximum size: 250cm

Frequently around all islands of the archipelago, it tolerates temperatures of 5 to 27°C. It lives in depths of 200 to 500 metres and surfaces at night. In the Canaries, specimens of up to 650 kg have been caught. Common in all seasons, its normal weight is about 540kg. Maximum size: 480cm.

This species, which migrates from the cold waters of the north, appears in abundance in the Canaries from November to April in the form of great schools. This one fetches the highest price on the market and is caught with light tackle.

King of the tuna family, it is the largest of its species. In the Canaries, specimens of more than 600 kg have been caught. A migratory species that forms schools, the best time to catch this fish is from February to May and from September to October. Maximum size: 310cm.

Very frequently in the Canaries -world record- it is the species most fished after the skipjack. Migratory - it is found in great schools that appear during the months of February to May and from September to October. It maximum size is 240cm.

Tropical tuna of warm waters, it mingles in the Canaries with the Bigeye and Blue fin, an unusual circumstance only found in few places in the world. The Islands are the ideal setting to break records for this species. After the Barrilote, it is the most highly prized species. Maximum size: 220cm.

Migratory species that comes to the Canaries from the south from spring to autumn. They form large schools that constitute the greatest tuna fishing the Islands: more than 7,000 tonnes in 1992. Maximum size: 100cm.

A very common species in the Canaries. Lives in superficial ocean waters and can occasionally be found near the coast. A gregarious and migratory species, this fish appears in the summer and autumn. Maximum size: 200cm.

A common fish in the western Islands, especially in El Hierro, during all seasons of the year. Specimens caught in the Canaries of up to 63 kg. This migratory species likes warm waters and it is usually seen floating near the surface. Maximum size: 185 cm.

Mortal enemy of the swordfish, this solitary and nocturnal animal can be found in open, shallow waters near the surface. The Canaries boast the World Record for fishing with light tackle. Captured specimens of up to 500kg. Maximum size: 420cm.
